A story of longing and loss set in the Alaskan wilderness. Childless older homesteaders are visited by a 10 yr old child. But only in winter. Is she real? Is she a figment of their longing for a child? We get a clear view of life in the wilderness and the challenges it creates. Their mutual love blossoms slowly and matures into a deep connection.

This was beautifully written. I loved Ivey's descriptions of the snowy landscapes of 1920s Alaska and the insight into how hard those early settlers had to work to succeed on their homesteads. I also enjoyed the fantastical element of the story and how, until the very end, one is always questioning which reality is actually real.
