On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous: A Novel

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to our American moment, immersed as we are in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is as much about the power of telling one’s own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard. With stunning urgency and grace, Ocean Vuong writes of people caught between disparate worlds, and asks how we heal and rescue one another without forsaking who we are. The question of how to survive, and how to make of it a kind of joy, powers the most important debut novel of many years.

A poetic treatise to being othered from your society and yet also from that which makes you other in the first place- your family and culture. A revealing story of a relationship between a young immigrant and their family broken by war, queerness and American culture. I think at its best this book explores the multiplicity of identity how we can be mother and monster, a caring grandmother and a woman broken from war, a lover and an addict, a gr...read more

This book was beautiful and unique. I almost didn’t rate it because it reads somewhat like a memoir / autobiography and as a rule I don’t rate peoples stories anymore BUT this is fiction so oh well. This book had all the right ingredients for a powerful novel right up my alley (messed up family / tragic tale / immigrant experience / LGBTQ) but it felt lacking upon assembly

Powerful yet self-effacing novel. This addresses sensitively so many current or recent issues : racism, immigrant status, Viet nam war, OxyContin addiction, mental health, growing up LGBTQIA., generational memory. So much of the purpose in this reads as poetry. Billed as a novel, this reads more like a memoir- drawing you in to the story and sympathizing immediately.

Part fiction, part memoir, this tells the story of Little Dog’s grandma, Lan, who had to escape Vietnam during the war, of Rose, her daughter who works in a nail salon in Hartford, CT and manages to keep a roof over their heads. And...read more
