This was indeed dark fantasy and I loved it despite it being a YA novel. I say this as it was somewhat dimmed down a bit due to the target audience- YA. It gives constant danger throughout the entire plot. It intertwines sadistic religious practices mixed in with hoodoo dark magic!
I had hopes for a creepy, “keep-you-up-at-night” story. Overall it was pretty PG. It was kind of “wordy” with lots of redundant descriptions and thoughts. It was still a pretty interesting story with witches and plages and a selfish religious leader. I probably would have liked this book better if I hadn’t listened to the audio, not a huge fan of the voice actor.
