So much sadness, but there is also joy. Stedman has set up an historical novel about impossible choices, set on an island just off the coast of Australia. Tom is nurturing emotional wounds from WWI and finds happiness and love as a lighthouse tender, married to a local girl. Until a boat washed up on his island carrying a baby and a dead man. The power of choices, living with those we’ve made. It makes a life.
This one also has a study guide for Bookclubs. I enjoyed it. Sad at times. Slow beginning but a good read.
At first I thought this book was vaguely hilarious because right up front you know they steal a baby. How do you even feel for a bunch of baby stealers? But then little by little the book ripped my heart out and showed it to me.
Also, I have a crush on this beautiful cover.
