I love a good fantasy tale, or you might call it a fairy tale. This one hit all the marks for me. A little slow but fluid. Plenty of backstories. The interaction with the young heiress seemed a little out of place at first. Once I finished the whole tale, it made sense. It told me what happened to the young girl so many hundreds of years ago. While I loved the book and the characters, I probably won't read the second book.

4.5 stars!

This actually started out really slow and I almost gave up on it, but I'm glad that I didn't because it ended up being one of my favorite books that I've ever read. I enjoyed this book, it didn't call to me to finish it and it took me longer than normal to get through it. It was an interesting concept and it came together in a beautiful way at the end. Its possible themes of characters trapped by destiny or who are unable to esc...read more

An unlikely, yet captivating set of characters here. We have a Polish golem, specially created to be the wife of a socially awkward man who does soon after walking the golem. And then we have a Syrian ginni, who is bound in human form against his will. They are separately carving out lives in late 19 th century NYC as immigrants, trying to fit in and also trying to learn control over their unusual powers.

Throughout the narrative, we see the two meet and become the most unlikely of friends who call one another's beliefs and opinions into question on a regular basis.

The Golem, Chava, is bu...read more
