Finally finished after two months. It’s a slow burn but eventful at the same time. The plot doesn’t drag on but at the same time it feels like it does because it’s so long (770 pg). It’s good to read for the winter. Has deaths, addiction, depression, hints of suicide, murder, and love. I really enjoyed this one. The scene of the young boy returning to his apartment to find his mother not there brought you straight into the experience of a child's despair more than anything I've ever read. The protagonist's persistent teetering on the edge of destruction was remarkably sustained throughout the book. It surprised me at every turn. Finally done. I feel like I won the battle. Honestly, there were some really well crafted ideas and passages in this, but why in God's name did it have to be 771 pp? I don't care about the details of Theo's drug addiction, nor his life as a swindler in the art and antiquities world. Even his relationship with his fianceé and so many other characters really didn't move the story line forward at all.
