The half of the story that focused on a young woman's journey on the orphan train in the early 20th C. was well developed and the character was compelling. I can't say the same for the parallel story and character, a foster girl that helps the now elderly orphan go through the mementos of her long life. She simply wasn't believable and the story of her travails in the foster system lacked any depth. I found myself dreading each transition back...read more

Resilience. And lost family. This story is about two orphaned girls, who meet when one is a nonagenarian and the other still in foster care. Their back stories unfold slowly and are shared with reverence. Niamh/Dorothy/Vivian was an Irish immigrant after WWI. Molly is a Penobscot descendant who has been in the Foster system since she was a preschooler. Their stories individually were heartrending. Together there was abundant synchronicity.

Another fabulous historical fiction read! And of course I love the fact that the author got her inspiration from a book about Jamestown ND, my home state! Lovely book that I couldn't put down!
