You always hear that children are so adaptable, and this gleefully gruesome novel depicting Madame Tussaud's transition from unloved servant girl to artisan in wax to sharp-witted businesswoman certainly bears that out. Mostly fiction but based in the murky facts of her life, the prose is delightful and the uncanny characters are lovable.
